Domestic violence has become a pandemic in South Africa and the world at large. Every ten minutes, somewhere in the world, a woman’s life is tragically cut short due to gender-based violence. This tragic reality is alarming and underlines the need for collective action and accountability. Today, South Africa joins the global community in observing and raising awareness to the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence initiative. The theme this year is #NoExcuse.
What is 16 Days of Activism?
16 Days of Activism is an annual commemorative campaign observed from November 25 to December 10. This initiative is a call-to-action campaign aimed at ending violence against women and children. It seeks to raise awareness, challenge societal norms, and promote efforts to create safer communities for all.
Gender-Based Violence?
Gender-based violence (GBV) refers to the acts of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, human trafficking, and harmful practices like forced marriages directed at individuals based on their gender. In South Africa, GBV has reached epidemic levels, with women and children often the most vulnerable.
What is the role of #NoExcuse?
The #NoExcuse campaign was made to emphasis that no justification will be given against women and children. It is aimed at highlighting the importance of addressing the root causes of violence, such as inequality, poverty, and substance abuse. Also challenging the ill-treatments, harmful attitudes and behaviours against others. All men are called to fight against GBV.
How Can We UNiTE to End Violence?
- Advocacy and raising awareness
Raise awareness about GBV through education and open dialogue. Knowledge empowers individuals to challenge stereotypes and act. - Support GBV Survivors
Provide survivors with the necessary support like access to justice, counselling, and safe spaces. Stand with organisations offering these services by donating time or resources. - Hold Perpetrators Accountable
Enforcement should be stricter for perpetrators so that women and children feel protected ensuring that perpetrators face the consequences of their actions. - Engage Men and Boys
Transform cultural attitudes by involving men and boys in conversations about respect, equality, and consent. - Join Campaigns and Events
Participate in local and global initiatives like marches, community workshops, and social media campaigns.
Why This Fight Matters?
Every woman has the right to live free from fear and violence. Ending GBV is not just about protecting individuals—it is about fostering a society where dignity, equality, and safety are universal.
Stand Up and Speak Out
During these 16 days, and beyond, let us raise our voices and act with urgency. Together, we can challenge the systems that perpetuate violence and build a future where everyone, regardless of gender, can thrive.
