Choko Five Movement Mourns the Loss of Leader Karabo “Zambo” Yumba

The Choko Five Movement has confirmed with deep sorrow the passing of one of its founding leader, Karabo “Zambo” Yumba. In a statement released on Sunday, the organisation described his death as an immeasurable loss not only to the movement but also to the wider Mogale City community.

“Today we share this communication with great sadness and disgruntlement beyond our wildest imagination,” the statement read. “The movement has lost an anchor, a leader, and one of the greatest minds Mogale City will seize to witness in a lifetime.”

Yumba, who was widely respected as an academic and community activist, held qualifications in Economics and Econometrics. He was also recognised as a strong advocate for township economic development and a committed campaigner for the economic liberation of African communities.

The movement highlighted Yumba’s dedication to the “African Dream,” describing him as a “soldier towards the Economic Liberation of our African communities whom we shall forever honour by soldiering on until the dream is realised.”

At this stage, the organisation has not released further details surrounding his passing, instead appealing to the public to give the Yumba family privacy and space to mourn.

In paying tribute, Choko Five Movement described him as a man whose vision would live on. “Brother… you have just left a void within us we may never be able to fill. However, you have planted a seed in us we will forever cherish and fight until we join you to grow into the vision we’ve shared together all this time.”

The statement closed with words of farewell in Setswana: “Robala ka Kagiso Karabo ‘Zambo’ Yumba. You have surely run your race and the creator has summoned for your return to the realm of our ancestors.”

The passing of Karabo “Zambo” Yumba leaves a significant gap in community leadership in Mogale City. For many, his legacy will be remembered as a relentless commitment to education, activism, and the empowerment of African people.
