We live in a world where phones have taken over our lives, literally! They are the first things we touch when we wake up in the morning and the last things we put down before bed. Silence has now become a luxury. We are always distracted by notifications that never end and keeping up with updates. Our minds are always itching to check and fingered ready to scroll. We never rest, breathe, and reflect. Have you ever considered that peace maybe be achieved by putting that phone down?
This is your time to unplug from the noise and reconnect with yourself. We have created a simple Digital Detox Meditation.
Always being online is the problem.
Our devices are always connected to social media that our attention is always pulled to them. We scroll for hours that we end up having “digital fatigue” what physiologists explain to be a mental overload caused by too much screen time. The irony of technology is that is connects us but also disconnects us from our thought, friends and families.
Meditation as a digital reset is the solution.
When we say Digital Detox Meditation, we do not mean throwing away your digital device. It is about prioritising yourself. You are learning to have a better relationship with yourself independent of the device.
Here are the four simple ways to start:
- Set time aside.
In your daily schedule pick a time where is it not usually busy for you. Take 10 minutes of your time, it could be after you wake up or before you sleep. Turn off all notifications, put your phone out of reach, and breathe.
- Listen to yourself.
While your breathing, listens to your breathing, focus on each rhythm as you inhale and exhale. No phone to distract you.
- Notice the urge.
You will be tempted to check your phone and that is okay but the win is resisting the urge. Recognise the feeling and continue breathing. The world can wait. That should be your reminder.
- Reconstruct your reconnection.
After meditation, do not rush to your phone, instead, take your notebook and pen, and write how you felt, or connect with someone face-to-face, it could be your partner, child or even animal.
Finding peace in a busy world is the reward.
Peace does not come from escaping life. Peace comes from being present. You will discover this as you continue practicing. As you continue disconnecting to connect, your mind will become clearer, your sleep will improve, and your physical connections will more genuine and special.
Over the year we have seen that technology is not going anywhere but growing, as it does, so should your peace. Digital Detox Meditation will help you balance your digital life with your actual life.
When that notification calls you, just breathe before checking it. Sometimes the best notification you can get is silence.
