KAGISO – A large portion of Kagiso and surrounding areas was plunged into darkness this afternoon after a field fire severely damaged a key part of the local power infrastructure.
According to a media statement issued by the Office of the Executive Mayor of Mogale City, the fire caused significant damage to the Westgate Transmission Substation. This facility is responsible for supplying bulk electricity to the Kagiso Distribution Substation.
Eskom, the national electricity provider, confirmed that the fire compromised the ring feed between the transmission and distribution networks. As a result, the affected areas experienced a complete power outage.
Eskom technicians were immediately dispatched to the site to assess and repair the damage. Initial reports suggest that power restoration may take approximately 10 hours, depending on on-site conditions and ongoing assessments.
The municipality has urged residents to remain calm and patient while Eskom prioritises the repair work. “We are in constant communication with Eskom to monitor progress and will provide updates as new information becomes available,” said the statement, signed by Palesa Molefe, spokesperson for the Executive Mayor.
The city also appealed to communities to exercise caution around electrical infrastructure, especially during emergencies.
Mogale City reaffirmed its commitment to transparent communication and assured residents that efforts are underway to restore power safely and efficiently.
