With Heritage month just around the corner, Phillip Mogopodi of Lekgathu Event Management and his esteemed team of creative individuals are preparing Lekgathu Park at Kagiso, Chief Mogale for South Africa’s annual Heritage Day on 24th of September, a day dedicated to celebrating the diverse cultural heritage South Africa is rich with.

Lekgathu Park was adopted by Phillip who was not happy with the dirty, neglected open space front opposite his home. The place was turned into a dumping site, which gave birth to pests such as rats and snakes that terrorised the neighbourhood. It was also a place where criminal activities took place. Phillip took charge, he cleaned the area, turned it into a park and gave it the much dignity it deserved. It is now used and loved by the community.

He is now working on project “Heritage Day” where he will host different stakeholders, government departments and Mogale Municipality. There will be stalls showcasing different heritage merchandise as well as African cuisine sold on the day. There will be performances by cultural groups (gumboots dance, zulu dancers, drum majorettes, etc.) and a live band to entertain guests on the day.

Phillip is currently building shelters for rainy days as well as for shade on hot days. The creative team has added a wall painted in bright colours, complemented by heritage related drawings. He wishes to uniformly fence the whole park. He has done some fencing but with makeshift fencing material.

Although Philip has done a lot of work, he feels that there is still more that can be done to make the park a lot safer, especially considering the safety of children who are always at the park. He says, “We are almost done; we just need more cement and paint to complete the project. There is a lot to be done here so we are asking anyone for donations. We would also like to barricade the park properly for the safety of our children who are always here.”
With the park’s renovations underway, Phillip is confident that Heritage Day will be successful. He invites everyone to come celebrate it at Lekgathu Park.
