World Malaria Day

25 April is World Malaria Day. This year’s theme is “Accelerating the fight against malaria for a more equitable world.”  

The World Health Organisation in its press release states that they have joined forces with other organisations “to highlight the critical importance of advancing health equity, gender equality and human rights in malaria responses worldwide.”

Here’s 5 things you need to know this World Malaria Day

  1. Malaria is a very serious and fatal disease that is spread by mosquitoes infected by parasites.  
  2. The disease is spread when mosquitoes feed on humans.
  3. Malaria flourishes in warmer places especially where rain and humidity are abundant.
  4. Side effects include headache, chills, flu-like symptoms, and high fever. These symptoms may get severe and cause death.
  5. It is reported that malaria takes the life of children every 2 minutes which makes it one of the leading causes of death in children mostly under 5 years.
